Gene Autry could well lay claim to the mantle of the most complete all-round entertainer of all time. The one-time labourer on the railroads of St Louis and San Francisco, Gene first broke into the public conscience via the radio, singing on a local radio station in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1928. His easy on the ear style soon had him marked for better things, and he would later host his own syndicated radio show for CBS. He made his first film in 1931 and went on to become a major star of both feature films and serials. Whilst his films were almost entirely so-called ‘B’ features, with production budgets of little more than $50,000, all of them made a tidy profit, with several grossing more than ten times their production costs. Whilst the films secured his future financial success, music was always an integral part of his career and he enjoyed countless hits on both the pop and country charts. The Singing Cowboy helped define country music, his influence being recognized with his 1969 election into the Country Music Hall of Fame. |
