The most popular of all band leaders, Glenn Miller enjoyed a little over seven years at the top of his profession whilst he was alive, but the quality of his recordings has ensured his popularity shows little sign of waning in the 60 years since his death. He formed his own orchestra in 1937, having served something of a musical apprenticeship as a trombonist with the Grant City town band, and four years later was acknowledged as the top performer of the era; when Billboard published their first sales chart in July 1940 he held three of the top ten places. Film appearances in Sun Valley Serenade and Orchestra Wives preceded his joining the US Air Force in 1942, and his band soon became as popular in the UK where they were stationed as it was in their homeland. Glenn Miller disappeared whilst on a flight to France in December 1944 - more than forty years later it was revealed that returning bombers had jettisoned their bombs over the Channel and that one had probably hit Miller’s plane. |
