Whilst multi-million selling artists are fairly commonplace today, back in the 1930s it was quite rare. The fact that Gracie Fields managed to rack up sales in excess of four million records between 1928, when she started her recording career, and 1933 makes her perhaps the first true superstar of the recorded age. Indeed, at the height of her career she was perhaps the most instantly recognised celebrity outside the royal family! She celebrated her fiftieth showbusiness anniversary with a performance at the 10th Royal Command Performance in London in 1978, a performance that would be her last in London before her death the following year on the isle of Capri. This album contains her best known song, 'Sally', the title song to her film debut Sally In Our Alley. |
