Bill Haley & His Comets are largely credited with popularising rock and roll music, thanks to their worldwide smash Rock Around The Clock. Initially a hit in 1955, the single refused to go away and returned to the chart summit the following year at much the same time Elvis Presley was making his chart breakthrough.
Whilst Elvis would pursue other musical avenues with little affect on his growing popularity, Bill Haley remained true to rock and roll, hitting the charts with Shake Rattle And Roll, ABC Boogie and See You Later Alligator, all of which were major chart hits and helped confirm rock and roll as the new musical sound of the street. Of the two albums on this CD, Rock And Roll Stage Show proved the more popular, topping the chart for a single week, but Rock Around The Clock proved more durable, spending more than four months on the chart. Those four months proved to be worth five decades of influence. |
